In a recent press release published on PR Newswire by the Arthritis Foundation titled, Arthritis Foundation Releases First CBD Guidance for Adults With Arthritis, revolutionary information is being shared on the medicinal benefits of hemp oil ingredient CBD (cannabidiol). The Arthritis Foundation has released recent stats that 50 million Americans suffer from some degree of arthritis, and that this is a leading cause of disability. What is CBD?

While the scientific research and direct understanding as to how and why hemp oil works is still in early stages, it seems that the only thing standing between wide-spread usage of hemp oil for arthritis is money and legislation.

I used to think the only way to handle a hangover was lots of water and time but earlier this year the coffee shop next to my office started selling hemp oil. One morning when I’d been a little too, ahem, enthusiastic at happy hour the evening before I decided to give one a try and see if it helped with my hangover. I quickly found that these were a great solution to pep me up the morning after a bit of over-indulging. I found that I didn’t get the combo headache & nausea that I usually do, and my mood improved quickly.

My first step was to understand what exactly causes the symptoms of a hangover, as in what systems are being affected in the body. The benefits of hemp may have been discovered as far back as 12,000 years ago, and we know that in 2800 BCE Chinese Emperor Shen Nung listed cannabis in his pharmacopeia, using it to treat rheumatism and poor memory. In the early 19th century Sir William Brooke O’Shaughnessy discovered the medical uses of cannabis while living in India and introduced it into Western medicine after using it to successfully treat pain in rheumatism and to treat convulsions or seizures. From then on tinctures that included cannabis became common, and it’s even rumored that Queen Victoria herself used a tincture to reduce pain from menstrual cramps! Hemp Goes to the Americas

When the Jamestown colony of Virginia was established, colonists were required to grow hemp to help reduce Britain’s reliance on outside sources for it. For the next several hundred years, hemp would be seen as an invaluable crop in the North American colonies, particularly by the government who often imposed mandatory hemp cultivation despite its lower cash value for the colonists. In fact, by 1630 most colonists’ clothing was made from it, and in 1735 Massachusetts residents were even allowed to pay their taxes in hemp!

The Discovery of the Cannabinoid

In 1898 researchers Dunstan and Henry managed to isolate a cannabinoid (or cannabinol as they called it) within hemp oil, but it would be almost a hundred years before the true value of full-spectrum hemp oil would be discovered.

Towards the beginning of the 20th century, cannabis began to be conflated with narcotics amid growing concern around morphine and opium addiction. Hemp & Misinformation in the 20th Century

When prohibition ended in 1930, the director of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics Harry J. Anslinger began a full-blown campaign targeting cannabis as a narcotic.

Films such as Reefer Madness were produced to influence public opinion and gain support for “anti-marijuana” laws. Anslinger’s campaign was highly successful, and several years later Congress enacted the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937. While the act was targeted towards recreational use of the plant, it effectively hamstrung industrial hemp production, making it less economically viable to import or produce hemp in the United States.

Cannabis continued to have some defenders including Fiorello La Guardia, the mayor of New York City at the time, who commissioned a study that showed no negative effects from cannabis usage, no indication that it was addictive, or that it was a problem among New York City youth, however Anslinger remained firmly committed to his campaign against the plant in all its forms.

The Controlled Substances Act & Hemp’s Conflation with Cannabis

In the next few decades, public opinion would become mixed and somewhat softened by findings such as La Guardia’s study, however by 1970 cannabis found a new antagonist in Richard Nixon who introduced “The War on Drugs” during his presidency. That term and the accompanying campaign would stick for the next 30 plus years, sweeping cannabis and hemp into one highly negative category in its wake. In 1970 Nixon signed the Controlled Substances Act into law, designating cannabis as a Schedule 1 drug, classifying it as a substance equivalent to LSD and declaring that it had no value for medical use.

This act effectively prohibited research and production of all types of cannabis, ignored and prohibited therapeutic use of cannabinoids in medicine, and disregarded the distinction between cannabis and hemp which would go almost entirely unrecognized for the next forty-plus years.

The Discovery of Cannabinoid Receptors

The scientific research of hemp or cannabis was fairly limited in the period following the signing of the CSA and a significant portion of the research that did happen was subsidized by NIDA (the National Institute on Drug Abuse) and devoted to researching negative effects of cannabis and THC.

However, in 1964 researchers of THC had discovered cannabinoid receptors, identifying the CB1 receptors for THC and, in spite of being hampered by the CSA, this work continued into the 1990s.

Hemp oil for dogs is all the rage right now and I’ve heard about it for a long time. I personally take Synchronicity hemp oil daily and I love it, but I never thought my 3-year-old English Bulldog needed it. Lola has always been easy going and fit, especially for a bulldog. She loves to chase balls, meet other pups at the park, and nap in the sun that streams through the window upstairs. But one day at the park she was running and then stopped and laid down. With the rise in popularity of CBD oil, many different ways to use it are being discovered by pioneers who have taken to exploring the multi-faceted benefits of this natural remedy. For far too long, cannabis was demonized and thought to only be fit for the couch-ridden stoner surrounded by snacks and failed dreams.

High on the list of things cannabis wasn’t “good” for was certainly weight loss. The munchie attacks and inability to stop eating were some of the most common issues with people who liked the effects of cannabis, but not those side effects. Surprisingly, now that there has been more and more research done on CBD alone, scientists have found that it can help with lower body weight and reduced BMI.

CBD (cannabidiol) is an active chemical compound found in the marijuana plant and industrial hemp plant called a cannabinoid. It is one of the most dominant of over 100 cannabinoids. Cannabinoids are a diverse class of chemical compounds that occur naturally in the body (endocannabinoids) and in several plants including cannabis.

All cannabinoids behave differently, but CBD is quite unique in that it doesn’t bond directly with the cannabinoid receptors. This is when the body is encouraged to produce endocannabinoids. This natural production of endocannabinoids is much better for the body as the production is native.

CBD Oil and Weight Loss

It is the endocannabinoid system (ECS) in particular that was identified as having a direct link to obesity and weight loss. The endocannabinoid system is a biological network located throughout the body that regulates various physiological functions, including sleep, appetite, mood, and inflammation. The prefix “endo-” is short for “endogenous,” meaning that the endocannabinoid system is comprised of endogenous, or naturally occurring, cannabinoid receptor cells throughout the body.

Hence, when you consume hemp, the plant’s chemical compounds, known as cannabinoids, activate the receptors throughout your endocannabinoid system. These receptors can engage with both phytocannabinoids, compounds that occur in the hemp plant, and endocannabinoids, compounds that occur naturally in the human body. Anandamide, for instance, is an endocannabinoid that the body produces. Also known as the “bliss molecule,” anandamide plays a vital role in functions such as pleasure, motivation, and appetite. 

Because the ECS is focused on restoring and maintaining homeostasis, it is believed that CBD oil will assist the ECS in normal functionality. There is a range of “normal” activity in all body systems. When the balance is compromised, towards over-activity or under-activity, the body works to compensate for the imbalance and that is when dysfunction can set in.

When paired with a healthy diet and regular exercise, CBD oil helps to restore balance to the ECS, further supporting a healthy weight, which can also include weight loss as well as keeping the weight off. When the body doesn’t have to work as hard to restore balance to a system like the ECS, then there is more energy to operate smoothly and efficiently. 

An article in Medical News Today stated: “Usually, CB1 receptors exist mainly in the brain and central nervous system and are almost nonexistent in the rest of the body. CB2 receptors, on the other hand, exist throughout the body. In people with obesity, however, CB1 receptors become more widespread, especially in fatty tissue. Because of this, researchers believe that there may be a link between the activation of the CB1 receptors and obesity.”

Through multiple recent and past studies, CBD oil is being claimed to work in the following ways that may help to reduce weight gain and promote weight loss. Please note that these are claims based on multiple research studies, mostly in animal subjects. Until more research is done in human studies, it is difficult to say exactly how CBD works in the body.

  • Reduce Appetite: A study from 2012 found that CBD oil exposure in the body of rats helped to reduce appetite. Cannabis has long been associated with an increased appetite and the munchies, but CBD oil on its own affects the body differently. While this study was only done in rats, it’s the CB1 and CB2 receptors that scientists were looking at.
  • Turn Bad Fat into Good Fat: A 2016 study helps back up this claim of CBD turning bad fat into good fat. CBD stimulated the body to break down brown fat more easily while also converting white fat to brown fat cells. White fat cells are seen as the “bad” fat and when they can be either broken down or converted, that is a step in the right direction to assist with weight loss and helping in cases of obesity.
  • Burn Fat: It is thought that once the white fat is converted to brown fat, that those “brown” cells will work harder to burn off and turn into heat. Brown fat cells are seen as a more active form of fat, making the conversion from white to brown in a direction that would be more capable of burning fat.
  • Reduce the Risk of Metabolic Disorders: Because CBD works to bring homeostasis to body systems through the endocannabinoid system, it is thought that this can also work to reduce the risk of metabolic disorders. When the body is in balance, it is much harder for it to fall out of balance with the assistance of CBD. Overactive CB receptors are the culprit for these disorders, and CBD works to block the CB1 receptors meaning it might also work to reduce the risk of metabolic disorders and there for diseases like type 2 diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure.

The Bottom Line

While these studies are still very much in their early stages, and much of these are still seems as claims until more research is able to be done on humans, there’s a lot we can glean from the research that has been done. Overall, this research shows great promise in developing new therapies. 

A healthy diet with plenty of exercise paired with CBD consumption just might be the way to help many change their lives and their health for the better. The claims made are still in review in many laboratories around the world and in the coming years, we will surely know more.
